The purpose of basic Blackjack strategy

The goal here is simple: it’s simply to reduce the casino’s advantage to a minimum, less than 1%. Luck and chance will do the rest. We hope they smile at you. But before that, let's take a look at how to reduce the bank advantage in a few easy steps.

The evolution of the basic strategy

As the basic Blackjack strategy has evolved over the years, casinos have also adapted the rules of the game to remain competitive. This is why, for example, we have seen the integration of several card games into Blackjack.

Therefore, Ed Thorp’s famous book "Beat the dealer" published in the 1960s remains a classic that should be read but cannot be a real guide for current players. To learn about the rules, it would be ideal if you went to visit specialized sites that will give you all the information you will need.

It is rather necessary to look at the side of the rules recently updated to have a real chance of increased profits. This is what we are going to do together right now.

Learn the basics and card counting

The training of a good Blackjack player is done in two stages:

1 - Learning the basics of the strategy

2 - Card counting.

Here are the 8 sentences to remember by heart:

1 - Between 17 and 21: never draw.

2 - From 12 to 16: never draw when the dealer has between 2 and 6.

3 - From 9 to 11: always double when the dealer has 2 to 6, otherwise draw.

4 - Two 8: share when the dealer has between 2 and 8, otherwise draw.

5 - Two 9: share them if the dealer has between 2 and 6.

6 - Two 10: never share.

7 - Share two Aces if the dealer has less than 6.

8 - If the dealer has 2 to 6: share the Aces, 1, 2, 3 and 4, double two 5 and stay on two 6 and two 7.

When you have memorized the 8 previous statements, you will only have to learn how to count cards which is very simple and can be summarized in the table below.

Card counting in Blackjack

Yes, that's for sure, we all play Blackjack for fun, to come and take a walk at the land or virtual casino, to meet other players, but if we can win from time to time, this adds, you have to admit, an attraction to this so interesting and entertaining game. And if you were told that winning more often is entirely possible in Blackjack by indulging in just a few easy little counts, would you be interested? If your answer is yes, read below!

The principle of counting cards in Blackjack

The technique presented here does not allow you to win "every time". If such a technique existed, the Blackjack tables in casinos would have simply disappeared. No, what we’ll explain in the next few paragraphs is just one way to dramatically reduce the casino’s advantage. The only skill required here from the player is concentration.

The general principle is to give a value to each of the cards and add them as they appear up to a key figure signifying that it is the best time to bet. Don't worry, we'll take a closer look at this later.

The value of cards for counting

This is the first thing to remember in order to use this strategy. So, for cards 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6, add "1". Then, for cards 7, 8 and 9, the value is "0". Finally, for the Ace, the 10 and the figures, we subtract "1".

In order to facilitate memorization, we generally use a small table like this:

2, 3, 4, 5, 6                    + 1

7, 8, 9                                   0

10, J, Q, K, Ace             -1

When to bet?

The principle is very simple: you bet when the score is positive. You don’t bet when it’s negative. That's all! Simple, right?

A priori, there is nothing complicated, but then you must be able to perform the count quickly and without ever making a mistake. That’s why we’re going to do some exercises with you.

Exercises

1 - The dealer has revealed a 7, the player on your right has a lady and a 6 and you have an 8 and a 9 in hand. Do you have to bet?

The answer: Here it is impossible to determine for the moment. All you can do is make a first count to go faster later. The account is as follows: 0-1 + 1 + 0 + 0 = 0. Wait and see.

2 - The croupier reveals a king and the second player receives a jack. How is the situation evolving for you?

The answer: It is better here not to bet and to wait for a better time. Indeed, to the previous "0", we add -1 for the king and again - 1 for the valet. The final result is therefore - 2. This is negative, therefore not very favorable.

And we keep counting like that until the right time. Now it's your turn to play!
